I was curious and was wondering if I have a rhode island red rooster and he mates with a silkie will the chick still be a silkie or combo? I don't know if I need a different breed of rooster for the different breed of chicken. Appreciate any help. Mike and Cheryl

I'm not really sure what you mean but you won't get a silkie.

Yes, your roo and hen MUST be the same breed in order for the offspring to be that breed.

If you're asking about Silkie feathering.... well, the F1 offspring will be feathered as normal chickens... you must breed them back to the Silkie parent or to another either Silkie or Silkie gene carrying chicken for the Silkie feathering to show up.
