Hey there! Well it's just us until the others get on. Bill and the others should actually be here any minute and they will probably want you to state a little about yourself. Nothing you don't want to though! Glad you joined!

Hi, I'd not mind talking about myself, I don't know weather I'm interesting or not.

any way earlier you asked about cross breds. I don't know loads but I know a bit. the basic brown hens you get which over here we call warrens are a cross between a rhode island red cockerel and a light Sussex hen. It has to be the rid cockerel over a light Sussex because the chicks are sex linked.

I don't know if I am interesting or not either! But just for the record I think you are!

See, I didn't know that! I do find chicken breeding / genetics fascinating! I know that if you mix a Silkie and a Frizzle you get a Sizzle!!!

Just noticed! This is a commemorative moment! 364 posts! One for each day of the year if I were making a calendar! It would be a strange calendar though!

Thanks, when you cross the two breeds all the hens are brown and the male are supposed to look like light Sussex but normally they are kind of white and a gold colour
Also a few of the English strains of Sumatras have black old english in them, because in the 1970s Sumatras were scarce so they were crossing to bring them back, and I think that's why my bird Sid looks gamey..

Sumatra's are still on the American Breeds Conservation List. They are stated as critical. Do Sumatra's come in other colors or they mostly black? It is pretty cool when you think about the fact that you have a very rare animal!

Yes sumatra's come in black, blue, and white, white is the rarest. There is also a colour called Dunn it isn't standardised yet but people are working on it. If you look at some of my photos you will see a Sumatra cockerel who has orange on his saddle feathers and hackles. I think the colour should be standard but it isn't, it was cut out way back when the first Sumatras where imported. And actually I'll post a picture of my orangey one now.
This is Bruce he won't be used for much breeding as the colour is not standard.

GeeWiz!! Bruce is Gorgeous! The orange on black looks really good! A truly nice bird! Such a nice stance as well. Is that his natural comb or did you dub it?
