Cross Continental Friends!!!

I've had different region of people over for the holidays and we all have our favorite foods we love to eat. Or it's just not the same, on that day. For me it's my mother's pickled beet recipe and meat pie's! We have the turkey or ham's we're not so much for the deserts cuz we eat to much of the other foods. What do the rest of you find special to eat on Thanksgiving and Christmas?

I may well just do that! You will have to give me a step by step guide of what it is and what I do!

lol you just cook a trukey for lunch or dinner with whatever you like to eat it with and you eat a bunch of pies like apple or pumpkin or any kind of pie that you like to eat and you have people over and you just eat turkey and desserts!

here on thanksgiving we eat the turkey but we eat it with spanish rice and pasteles (i have no idea how to make pasteles). some people make the pork shoulder too with the turkey or they just make the pork shoulder. they also have other dishes that im not familiar with and for dessert they eat pies and also they like to eat flan. but a not to anyone is that pork is a puerto ricans best friend they eat it a lot. i think its their favorite meal. lol and the funny thing is when you go shopping the pork section is as big as the chicken section. they love their chicken and love their pork.

What are pasteles?! Yeah pork is good. That's what I cooked for the roast yesterday, slow cooked.

For Christmas I normally do roast turkey, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, and carrots done in honey and mustard, brussel sprouts cooked with chestnuts and bacon and garlic, sausages wrapped in bacon, stuffing, cauliflower or broccoli cheese, mashed carrots and swede, Yorkshire puddings, bread sauce and cranberry sauce. Oh and gravy. I'm sure I've forgotten something. Then the traditional pudding here is Christmas pudding with brandy cream but I don't like Christmas pud and am normally so full up I'm not bothered about pudding. We don't normally bother with a starter either as we want to get to the good stuff! On Christmas morning I normally do either smoked salmon or a joint of ham/gammon with eggs and toast/croissants for breakfast. Boxing day is always cold leftovers. And Christmas eve is normally something that's a favourite meal after I've dragged Angus to the christingle carol service at the local church.

So do you lot open pressies on Christmas eve? On films American's seem to do that a lot.

When the boys were young, from the beginning. We would have footprints on the carpet in the shape of Santa's boots-to look like snow fell off his boots. Or we had dried up prunes and we left some on the porch to show that the reindeer pooped on the porch. We'd take our stockings to our bed and we'd do paper, rock, scissors and the winner would pick the direction the person's would open. Then one at a time, we'd feel it, shake it whatever, and guess what it was. If the got it they could change the direction of opening gifts again. Stockings could take a few hr's but we had to much fun. Using duck tape whatever to make it harder to guess! We'd go into the kitchen for egg croissants. the eggs would be already cooked so all one had to do was reheat the egg and Americana cheese and zap the croissant for a sec. and our lundh was done. With some coffee we'd go to the living room. In the living room we would see Santa had eaten all of their snacks and maybe a bag of coal was found in the stocking so they had to pick up the papers when we were Thur. And we'd repeat the game again, of guess whats in the bag! After going threw all the presents one at a time it would be time for supper. I would of had the turkey all set in the oven and the mashed potatoes would be reheated and I'd make a gravy w/ the turkey juice along w/ the stuffing. Onions would of been placed in the turkey part was Thur cooking cuz we love to eat that also. I'd have meat pies all made up the day or week before. (or sooner, placed in the freezer) before The squash & turnip were cooked before. And my mothers pickled beets just have to be on the table w/ the pickles, olives and such. Fake champagne, juice, beer, juice and milk. Apple pie, choc chip & walnut coffee cake and brownies. That's all that I can think of But by the time it's put on the table and eaten you feel like a foul for not taken any help!

your food sounds yummy. i think it depends on the family when it comes to opening gifts on christmas eve. in my house each person could only open one or two gifts and that was it.

aww nancy your holidays seem so fun!

Wow Nancy that sounds amazing! Yeah we used to come down to a roaring fire and Christmas music playing then we'd open our sacks from father Christmas then various years either we open all the others after that which left you bored for the rest of day or recently we do Santa stuff have brekkie then faff around with our new stuff and sort out lunch then open the rest of the gifts after dinner and then veg out! Possibly turkey sandwiches for tea if there's room! Sounds like you really made an effort for your kids. We didn't have anything like that. Sometimes Santa didn't even eat his mince pie :(
