crossbeak chick anything i can do for it?

My chicks arrived last Friday and I just noticed that one of the white silkie is cross beaked a tiny bit Im afraid it will just get worse I was hopping except I caught it early is there anything I can do? and how long will it live you think if I can't?

It all depends upon how bad it is now. Some get worse over time & others don't. I've got a cross-beaked cochin banty (Tribble) who does fine. Tribble does need a deeper food trough so that she can eat easily. She's got a tough time catching bugs on concrete or hard surfaces.

If your chick fails to thrive, you'll have to cull it.

Try doing a search on BYC for twisted beak & cross-beak to find out what others have done.

We also have a crooked beak silkie. He/She is 6 weeks old and doing fine. We just couldn't bring ourselves to cull it. Maybe if it was suffering, but it is not. Just give it extra lovies.

I don't think I would have the heart to ever cull it. Its not bad yet just hardly.

I have a crooked beak little EE girl named Grady that thrives. She is 1 yr old & about 5 months.

I guess hers got pretty bad when she was about 3 months old. I was so worried about her getting enough to eat back then that I would syringe feed her. My hubby kept telling me not to get to attached b/c he didn't think she would make it, but she did.

I tried to file it and I trimmed it just a little to try to even it out. You have to be super careful not to cut into live tissue. She was so soar afterwards that I have never attempted to do it again.

She eats fine on her own now. She even lays a pretty green egg for me regularly.

Things you can do to help is provide a deep feeding dish for the food.

I have one also that is about two months old, at this point it is not getting worse, and after reading about it on here in the beginning I have just made sure it has a nice deep dish and the treats are big enough for it to get its beak into. So far so good, and this one is thriving, plus because of the extra attention it tends to be one of my favorites. I also know if it does get so bad that it can't eat on it's own, I will need to rethink this situation, but I think we are ok and am glad we went ahead and kept this one, as it is a real sweety. The beak has been pretty stable for the last two or three weeks without getting worse, but it definitely is noticeble.

Do you have a picture of her now that I can see? I have 1 with this issue but I am afraid it is worse that yours....​

I'm sorry, but I didn't see this post until just now. I will try to find a pic of her. I do have old pics of her on photobucket...I think.

Her beak is still crooked. She has adapted to eat w/ her head cocked sideways. I provide deep dish feeder & water. In the evening she free ranges pecking at stuff. I put sunflower seeds in the evening on top of the food in the feeder for her before bed time treat. That way she can have her treat in peace while the rest of the flock is busy foraging before bedtime.

I probably need to have it trimmed again, but haven't had the heart and she has adapted so well. She's such a sweet girl that loves to crawl in my lap and snuggle.
