Hey guys, it’s been a while since i last logged in! Happy new year to y’all!

i have a couple of questions and i hope some experts would chime in and shed some light.

I live in Asia and used to import chickens from the US. Due to the flue outbreak, the ban to import from the US is still in place, we are unable import anymore.

i have some birds and would like to know what color will i get if i crossbreed them.

example: a white rooster over a black hen - what will be the colors of their offsprings?

can i breed a white brahma over lavender orpington to produce lav chicks?

thank you in advance

White Rooster over Black hen = White offspring.

White/Light Brahma Rooster over Lavender Orpington hen = Black Offspring > Split to lavender.

You will not always get white chicks. There are two ways to make a solid white chicken, Dominant White and Recessive White. Dominant White only affects black feathers, it turns them white. It does not affect any other color. And since it is a dominant gene, you only need one of those genes at that gene pair to be Dominant White. Also black is pretty dominant over most things. So usually you only need one of the genes at that gene pair to be black to get a black bird. So if your rooster is pure for Dominant White and either the rooster or hen is pure for black, you should get white chicks. If he is not pure for Dominant White but is split, then you will likely get some white chicks, some black. Pure means that both genes at that gene pair are the same. Split means that they are different.

Recessive White is a recessive gene so both genes at that gene pair need to be Recessive White for it to have an effect. But it does not require black to have an effect. If it pairs up it turns everything white. You don't know what could be hiding under Recessive White. Could be red, buff, barring, Blue, just about anything. Since the hen is black you would probably get black chicks if he is Recessive White, but don't be too surprised of Barring or something else shows up.

No. Lavender is a recessive gene. When it is pure, Lavender turns black feathers to lavender. That means you can consider your Lavender hen to be black in this breeding. The Lavender will be split so it will not have an effect. That means see above for what you can expect to get.
