I have had Muscovies for years, then bought a pair of Pekins at the local hay auction, dinner being the goal, but the female began laying and gave us an egg a day all winter, while the seasonal-layer Muscovies were off. So we let both of them live, and the Muscovy drakes never made a move on the Pekin hen, nor did the Pekin drake go after the Scovy hens. Well, that's natural, two different species of duck, not just different breeds, so they'll stick to their own..... this spring though, while the Muscovy drakes still have no interest in the Pekin hen, the Pekin drake has decided he is going to nail every hen on the place, regardless, and he's a bully. I do NOT want crossbred ducks, I don't want my Scovy hens abused, and I don't want to stress my senior Scovy drake through having to protect 11 hens. Looks like Mr. Aflac is going to the small animal swap tomorrow, and if he doesn't sell, he's going to be Sunday dinner. Hard on the Pekin hen, though, she's a gentle and quiet bird, never quacks ( the drake never shuts up), and she is always with him, very bonded.

She's going to miss him.

I think it's sad that you are so against cross breeding. The crossbreeds I have/had were my best ducks. And I'd take a lavender Hinnie or Mule anytime. Only been looking for about 3-4 years now.

We have a member who has Muscovy's and bought Pekins to cross breed with them to make a faster growing meat duck, she hasn't been on BYC in a while but would be interested in how that turned out. Pekins crossed with other breeds make nice ducks.

Muscovy crossbreds with other ducks are STERILE, and I want a sustainable breeding flock of purebred Muscovies. Nothing "sad" about that!

The Pekin drake and the three young, excess chocolate Muscovy drakes have been sold.
