Crossing Breeds for Experimentation?

I have 8 different chicken breeds and I plan on letting nature take its course for a bit and I plan on experimenting with cross breeds. I want to cross my black australorps with a blue orpington....
And my leghorns are very friendly with my black frizzle cochin bantam roo lol

I have a friend who can take on some more chicks and I also plan on eating my chickens too (eventually). Same reasoning as you - better life/hate factory farming.

This is my cross breed roo, his daddy was an idk and his momma was an idk also, but he's beautiful! Lol! He's orange and white and slate blue

As long as you've got a plan for any chicks you're not wanting to keep, I don't see an issue with it. There's a big market for low-priced chicks that can be grown for backyard layers, lots of people want to get into homesteading because of the economy and worry about the health of our food supply, and crossbred birds have an appeal both because they can often be had for a lower price than purebreds (though I've had people not blink an eye at paying $5 apiece for "barnyard special" straight run chicks I've hatched and sold! The feed store sells assorted straight run hatchery chicks for $7.99 each around here) and because of "hybrid vigor"--they tend to be pretty tough little birds. If you live in an area with interest in chickens, I don't think you'll have much trouble finding homes for extra chicks if you have any.

Thank you, guys! Beautiful birds, everyone - I love that buff, barred rooster! This is encouraging information. I live near Dallas/Fort Worth, so there are always people looking for chickens. It has taken off pretty strong down here, even with the suburbanites - of whom I will shortly no longer be a member!

I'd like to add also, be true to your plan! Don't let people discourage you from crossing breeds! Just sell them as cross breeds and not pure bred, tho (We had neighbors sell mutt dogs as pure bred, if it looked German Shepard that's what they sold it as! disgusting!) And have fun with it!

Totally agree

If you have a plan for the babies, you're being responsible. Eating them is a plan, as is selling them. It's the folks keeping the incubators full all the time then crying cause they can't keep roosters and don't understand why no one wants to give their mixed breed roos a "loving forever home" that irk me. That's being irresponsible.

Oh absolutely - I wouldn't want someone to sell me a cross as a purebred, so I wouldn't do it to anyone else! That's just plain lying. Ain't cool. I feel reassured that my plan is a sound one!

Has anyone ever crossed laced Wyandottes onto other breeds and gotten laced chicks? I have no idea how the laced genetics work ...
