Crossing Breeds for Experimentation?

Quote:
Exactly my thoughts I was gonna type up a big ol thingy here the other day but galanie just summed all I had to say in one little bitty sentence.

I have LOTS of lets just call them "experiments" running all over this place my "whatchamacallits" they're probly crosses and mixes of every common breed and variety you could possibly think of, and they are the greatest little boogers too, tough as nails, and lay like the dickens(pretty too not a one looks much like the other they have variety and spice).

It was 25* here this mornin' and I went out to feed the big chickens and lo and behold guess what's standing there wanting their mornin' rations too, 9 little down covered 5/7 day old "experimental" chicks out in this crap a peeping and just as merry as the rest of the bunch to see me there with a big ol bucket full of feed to give them for breakfast. So who needs a stinking heat lamp for this crap; the most expensive, high falutin,' pure blooded, non contaminated bloodline chickens (weak

) and I got lots of them too and would'nt even attempt to be raising them this time of the year because it would be a hopeless cause and a waste of time and money and possibly some great chicks.

Have fun with it its your hobby do as you will.

I'm not much of a fan for the barred variety in any breed, but this one is beautiful.

Anyone ever get any of these going?

I'm lookin' into cross breeds just because, as with dogs, they're typically the best chicken you're gonna get (unless you breed for SQ of course). I have 3 hens left from a Buff Orp roo over RIR hen cross and I butchered all their brothers a while back, YUM

, and they were fairly large. The hens are layin' larger eggs then anything else I have right now (Easter Egger, and pure Buff Orps) so I'm thinkin' what the heck. I've already got a Buff Roo now I've just gotta find some RIR hens (like that'll be hard) lol. Or I could just breed him back to the crosses and get 3/4 Buff, 1/4 RIR and see how that turns out.

Whatcha think?

The backcross ought to work really good. You might get some broodies though, Orpingtons are known for their broodiness.
You going to the auction at the fairgrounds this coming Saturday 4/26/2014?

No, I'll be in the turkey woods tryin' to take an Ol' Tom by surprise. I wish I could go I need some layin' hens right now. I am lookin' to breed the BO/RIR crosses back to the Buff Roo I have along with breeding some pure Buffs. but that won't happen til later on... Can't afford the feed at the moment. lol

my husband does the same thing he loves to cross breed some of our chickens but we also have some that we keep pure, we have lavender orpington, blr Wyandotte, silver laced Wyandotte, blue jersey giants, coronation Sussex and blue gold laced brahma I forgot I am waiting on some French Blue copper marans, so excited can hardly wait
