Can someone suggest how to stop my year old Austrolorp from constant cackling/crowing/ alarm cry? She started a week ago all day long. I thought she was sounding an alarm for raccoons, but I cannot see any predator of any kind. She does it all day long. I had to rehome my rooster about a week ago as well. Is she crying for him? This is worse than the rooster. My neighbors are going to have a fit. Could I get her some more girlfriends? Do you think this will stop? Has anyone even ever heard of this strange behavior. Right now she has bee cackling for over 10 minutes and I have been out to the coop three times to calm her down with no results?????????????????????????

Are you saying she's alone? If she is, that's what the problem is. Chickens are very social birds.

Definitely some female friends, but I strongly urge a quarantine of 30-45 days. Perhaps you could could set it up where they can at least hear each other.

Is she alone? If so, you've rehomed her only friend and she's probably very lonely.
If there are other hens in with her, perhaps she has taken the rooster's role and become lead hen.

She has a bunk mate silkie also one year old. I have six week chicks that I am slowly introducing by cage association to get her more friends. That worked for a little bit yesterday. So did free ranging, but it is raining hard this morning right now.
