Crowing already?

I have a chick that hatched July 8th. At just over 7 weeks he is starting to crow. Isn't this a little early? It's not a full crow yet, the sound is like a "froggy throat."

Seems right on track for a cockerel. Usually in a batch of 20 chicks I have one or three trying out their manly vocal cords around that age. By the time they're 12 weeks, most will be crowing.

How old is the average rooster when he crows? I have 2 18-week old cockerels that still aren't crowing.

Average? Probably around 12-14 weeks I will have a little more than half of mine crowing and they will be sporting their male patterned feathers. But I have also had some late bloomers. It really depends a lot on hormones, breed and environment. Mine are Ameraucana/production layer crosses so they're probably a little young. The cockerel in this picture seems to also be a production layer of some sort so it's not too surprising that he's crowing young. Other breeds are more common to be late.
