Crowing at night?

He is hearing something or seeing light from somewhere. Or he just can't sleep like me.

Something is alerting him. Could be a noise, or basically anything and everything he finds disconcerting.

I ran out there like a lunatic thinking it was a predator, but they all looked at me like "what are YOU doing here?"

Crowing at night serves same purpose as a mockingbird singing at night. It is an advertisement directed at hens / pullets looking for a new flock to join. It is also a warning to other males. I think males that can really belt out frequent, loud and clear crows get their way.

Stan the Man will start crowing as soon as he hears me in the horse barn which is 5 am.
