Crowing hen?

I was playing with my Japanese Buff Black-tailed Bantam today (she's 17 weeks today) and she tried to CROW! I'm positive she's a she....she looks exactly like a JBB hen in all the pics I've looked up.

Anyone else had a crowing hen? And why would she do this....she's never even heard a rooster crow. LOL

Whan there is a hen but no rooster she may start to crow. This has happened bufore. Are you sure it is a she?

My hen crows! Every morning without fail, she starts in at sunrise and doesn't stop until I let them out of the coop.

My leghorn pullet crowed 4 times once... she was raised with boys.. She is just a weird chicken lol.

New Bird, yes, I am pretty sure she is a she.....she looks almost exactly like this hen in the pic on the right: http://www.cacklehatchery.com/japanesebantams.html#buff except mine has longer legs.

She hasn't crowed at all since, just that one time. It was the funniest thing! I did a search on crowing hens and found quite a bit. Thanks for the replies.

We have a 3 1/2 month old silkie "hen" that crowed one day. Several days passed with no crowing. I was hoping it was just a fluke or whatever. But she crowed again and again every 3-5 days or so. I have now given up on the idea of her being a hen and have accepted her for a him! We aren't allowed to have roos where we live, but he is so mild-mannered about it that I am going to try and keep him!

So funny I found this thread as my brother came over tonight to help us move a cage and he was "chatting" with the bantam hens (buff black tailed) and one of my hens and yep she is a egg laying hen started crowing back granted it wasnt the prettiest sound you have ever heard but she did it over and over in front of about 10 of us! We were all rolling laughing as we cant have roosters in the city due to crowing and now my hen is crowing! lol

We only have 3 pullets so far. This morning when I went out to open the coop door, a rooster was crowing down the road. My newest pullet, a 15 week old Ameraucana, stuck out her neck and tried to crow back- twice! It was a pitiful crow, much lower in volume and just generally not quite right. I almost had a fit thinking I'd gotten a rooster by mistake, but she certainly has hen characteristics.

Once I opened the coop she stopped "crowing" and hopped out with the other girls.
