Crowing Hen

I have a barred rock hen who, about a month ago, started crowing like a rooster-well, almost like a rooster. Someone thought it might be she has something stuck in her crop. Any ideas? Anyone else have a crowing hen?

Welcome goldcatdoghen,

Hens will sometimes take up crowing, especially if there is no roo present. It's more of a dominance thing.
I had a hen that crowed very poorly on & off for about a year. Now hasn't done it for about a year.

Crowing hen has a whole different vocabulary for egg laying.

My Henny-Penny crows too. She hasn't laid any eggs yet, she's probably around 3 1/2 -4 months old. How old are they generally when they start laying?

The age varies I've read as early as 14 weeks and as late as 6 months. Average around 20 weeks.

My 1yr old girls do that- 2 of them in particular, Sandra D & Crystal. They will stand in the coop door & cackle like mad! I think once my little baby roo grows up he'll put a stop to all the bullying those ladies do.At least that is my hope.

I had a hen turn into a roo. There were 3 chickens in that coop, 1 hen and 2 roos. She laid 1 egg, then no more. Then she started looking like a roo, larger comb and wattles and her feathers started looking rooish. I did some googling and found out hens only have 1 ovary. If something happens to it, they take on male characteristics. Strange but true!
