I have read about crowing hens but found it hard to believe.
We have 3 australorp/polish hens that are almost 3 months old.
Yesterday I heard a strange noise out the front door and saw one of them making obvious crowing sounds.
We already have 4 roosters and all the chickens are free range. Thus ruling out the need for one of the hens to become dominate and take on rooster characteristics! All three hens look identical and none of them have other rooster-like attributes. I am just curious what is going on with them!!

3 month old cockerels might not be showing secondary sexual characteristics yet. It is very possible that one or more of them are cockerels.

The other day as I was letting my 5 hens out of the coop, one of them let out a crow that sounded like a rooster crow but much shorter and weaker than a real rooster. It sounded good, but that was it, one crow from the girls in 2 years.

When I still had Little Ricky (our Cochin rooster), he would belt it out all the time

I have a bantam hen that crowed, loudly and clearly, one time: the morning before the F-5 tornado hit us here in Joplin.
