Crows and Hawks

Yeah, they steal eggs, but they do a pretty good job of keeping the hawks out of my yard. Here are a couple of pictures I took of the pesky birds.

Now, if I have my Crows and Ravens ID correct, I would say this is a Raven! Crows have fan type tails and Ravens have more pointy wedge shaped tails. And of course Crows are much smaller than Northern Ravens. (The Chihuahuan Ravens are only slightly bigger than Crows). Beaks on Ravens are more round and thick where as Crows have flatter thinner beaks.

(Sorry about the Ornithology lesson here, you MUST know I have a Crow Raven obsession)

What kind of crow in the area if not a raven. I have two species, American Crow and Fish Crow, that are relatively easy to tell apart by looks, size, flight and voice. The American Crow does not always look like American Crows in other parts of the country. Would be nice to see a genetics study targeting the American Crow. Some American Crows seem to have a live cycle like I understand ravens to have where adults keep a constant territory / home range while immature birds flock up for first year after leaving natal territory.

We have ravens, crows AND hawks, owls and eagles... they all just kind of take turns, depends on the time of day and so on. So I use a net to keep the hawks away. Works great!

I do love seeing the crows and ravens. They are such intelligent cool birds. Have to say I love all birds, not just chickens. These are great photos!

They do keep the hawks out. I owe them a lot!!! A hawk came and picked up one of my chicks and a whole bunch showed up and got territorial. In order for the hawk to protect itself it had to drop my chick. Luckily she survived!!!

Love the pics Just curious is there a difference between crows & ravens, or are they the same? Sorry for my stupid question.
