As a former domestic abuse victims advocate I can tell you that's exactly what it is. Studies have shown that someone who will abuse an animal often times progresses to hurting humans; mainly their spouse and/or children.
When I first got Charlie Girl she had welts an inch wide and 5 and 6 inches long all over her back. After three months of never hearing her bark, the vet checked her throat to make sure she could bark. Turns out she could, but was too afriad to. I can't tell you how many times I've wished I could get my hands on her original owner.
We don't watch the news anymore. My DH sees enough ugliness in his work and I rarely watch TV anyhow.
