Crumbles or Pellets? Problems we are having -

Thank you! This gives me a bit more to think about. They produce the food right where we bought it, I never even looked for a date. I really think it is just ground too small - it is like a mash, just dust mainly.

We use Flock Raiser crumbles. Our chickens don't seem to like the pellets and they used to just scratch it out onto the ground. A couple of years ago we started mixing the crumbles with water to make a mash. We have had virtually no waste since we started doing that and the chickens love it!

We have a feeder that uses the same mechanism as the one shown in this link: http://petoverstock.com/media/catal...f742ffe127f42dca9de82fb58b1/L/S/LSWR15027.jpg.This feeder is very convenient because you can control how much food you want to flow out.

Also, your feeder may not be working because the food in it is damp and sticking in clumps. Make sure you keep it dry and don't fill the feeder more than a scoop per day so the feed doesn't have time to sit there and collect moisture. I hope I helped

Most local mills produce mash, because the machinery to make pellets cost more, and crumbles are made from pellets. I don't love the mash texture either, so it's another reason for me to buy Flock Raiser. Mary

get a feeder with dividers to prevent them from scooping the feed out.. plus hanging it up (using chains and hooks) and adjust as needed

you will notice little feed waste that way

I'm going to have to read the bag. It really does look more like a mash, you're right!

And thank you for the pictures of other feeder styles. I'll have to see if we need to raiser their pvc tube feeders up higher too.

I gave up bulk feeding. For small groups of birds I feed all they can eat in thirty minutes and they free range. I gave up on regular feeders because birds wasted and at night rats/mice were attracted. I can do head count, ensure all are eating, and catch all small problems while still small.

If you are not home during the day you could still do morning and evening feeding and leave just what they will eat out during the day. I do keep feed out all day for chicks until three or four weeks old. After that I feed all they can eat in 30 minutes.

I am pretty sure we have that exact feeder and there is absolutely no waste. Everybody needs to get one.
