Crushed Egg Shells for food?

Mine are only 3 months old. I started collecting our expensive, store bought, quality egg shells about a month ago. Since they are already clean, I set them in a tray out in the sun to dry any extra white that may be in the shell. Then I crush them somewhat by hand, toss them into my Vita-Mix for a few seconds and...voila...crushed egg shell! I have a 16oz jar almost full and eggs out back prep-drying for crushing.

haha, thanks for asking that ... who knew?

Oops I forgot what I wanted to respond to.
My 1 roo and 9 girls are 18 weeks.
Just today I gave them 2 dried and crushed shells. Gone in 60 seconds!
They are sooo ready to lay. Go Girls!
Maybe tomorrow ...

I save mine until I have a dozen or so, then I whirl them up in the food processor. I usually just mix them in with there feed. Another great source of calcium is yogurt and my gals love it!!! I give them plain 2 or 3 times a week. They are fun to watch while they are eating it too.

Yeah mine are hysterical to watch eating plain yogurt.
I had to stop though as my 4 Polish girls were getting their hats ripped out with all the after pecking.
Their heads were loaded with the stuff.

Ditto!! I collect my eggs late in the morn and in the eve, depending if I'm home or not. Occasionally it is when we shut them in.
Forgot to answer the original question!! I also crush my eggshells. I rinse them out and lay them on a towel to dry out then I collect them in a gal ziplock bag, then when it is almost full, I kinda mash them down with my rolling pin and when they are manageable I roll the pin over and over untill they are crushed into tiny pieces. My hens love them!

Mine go in a tin can on the counter and get crushed with a meat tenderizer. New ones get added to the top til the can is full.

So we don't have to cook them? I have been browning mine. All I have yet is storebought, she's 18 weeks but not doing the egg squat so I'm hoping she'll squat soon!
