my Japanese cockerel has crust around top part of his eye. It was swollen for a while but swelling has gone down. it’s been probably a month and doesn’t seem to be getting much better. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It really pulls up on his eye lid when I give it a little pull. I put a little hen healer ointment on it. Maybe a damp towel will soften it up enough to get off. Strange it’s been a month and hasn’t healed possibley gotten slightly worse.

You could get some ophthalmic ointment and apply it around his eye. Look for saline solution too. You can find these items in like a Walmart where they sell contact lenses supplies. If he were mine I’d apply the ointment and leave it on till the next day. Then I’d have someone help me hold. Get a soft cloth and wipe gently. See how much crust comes off easily. Then I’d flush the eye and eye area with the saline solution. I’d repeat this process daily until you see improvement. If you get the crust cleaned off could you take photos of what the skin looks like underneath?
Just my 2 cents worth. Best wishes

I'm wondering if his tear duct has gotten blocked, his eye is bubbly. Just my two cents but i'd try to clean him up with a cotton swab and warm water then apply a stye cream "for people" to the inner corner and top of the lid and see if it gets any better.

Great pics of hen healer, thank you.
Nothing in there to prevent infection or fungal growth, would be good for scaly leg mites tho.

Hard to say what that crust near eye is and what to do about it.
This is the best advice so far:

I would not put the Hen Healer anywhere near his eye. You can do a warm wet compress to the eye, and within a few minutes it should be able to be cleaned off. Clean out any puss, and apply an antibiotic ointment to his eye twice a day after cleaning it. Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin/Triple Antibiotic Ointment are good to use.

He may have mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG,) which is a chronic respiratory disease. Does his face stink? If he smells bad, he could have coryza. Since this has been going on for a month, he may have puss in the eye, and that really needs to come out. If you want to try treating with an antibiotic, Tylan 50 injectable given orally, can be used to treat symptoms of MG. If he stinks, you may want to treat him with a sulfa antibiotic, such as SMZ-TMP, or sulfadimethoxine which you have to get online or from a vet. Let me know if you need dosages. Here is a link for the sulfa antibiotic:
