Crying gosling

I have a bigger basket that is similar to those but it's metal. So I think I'm going to put the wooden basket inside the metal one. Also, we have barbed wire fences separating us from the neighbors. This keeps out big dogs, but smaller dogs can get through. I think I'm going to put a few more layers of the barbed wire and that will prevent any dogs from getting in.
Yes, some places around here put a strand of barbed wire along the ground, then another strand 4" up, then another 4" up, then 6" up, etc. I t seems to work fairly well.
I just have chain-link here, and last night my dog just tore it up from the bottom so she could get to eat the chicken food! Such a pest.
Have fun with your babies!

How's everyone doing? we spent a small fortune getting fencing put up, we have blk bears and they were tearing down our welded wire fencing to the point I couldn't even bend it back up, Predators will go to great lengths to get to out flocks. Thank goodness the feral dog population has dwindled in the last few years, but I still keep the shot gun by the back door.

Everyone is doing fine! The older ducks (now 7 weeks) have allowed the stray duckling (now 4 weeks) into their pack. The little guy seems very healthy now, but also very small for his age! He still looks like the other two did when they were only 2 weeks old.

The two goslings are doing well and aren't crying so much. They are already twice the size they were when they came to us. We have a duck house built and are trying to come up with a plan for where the geese will live, we are not sure if we need a house for them or not.

We had a scare the other day when I came into the yard and a dog had one of the big ducks! I scared him off and he dropped her and she was completely unharmed. We've spent the last two days work on fencing. We are putting barbed wire up the fence every 4 inches or so starting at the ground, to start.

We're still trying to figure out who is a boy and who is a girl. Of the two oldest ones, one is twice the size of the other. However, the bigger one has started quacking and to my ears, it sounds like a proper quack. Plus, the big one nearly steps on her own feet when she walks, which I have been told is a female trait. The smaller one's legs are wider-set.

My gosh how awful, thankfully you came out just at the right time. Sounds like your getting it fortified and hopefully this won't happen again. So happy to hear they are all doing so well. They do grow fast don't they and the tiny duckling may always be tiny, maybe it has a bit of Call or East Indie in it. They all look great!

They look lovely. With the ducks, the females quack and the males make a funny little noise, and I find tht the ducks are far more dainty than the drakes. Time will tell! Thanks for the pic, we love to see how they´re doing, and good work with the fencing!

I'll have to wait and see how the others sound to compare, but the big one definitely sounds like quacks to me. We looked up duck quacks on YouTube (
) and it sounds more like the female one. However, she/he is not in the least bit dainty!
