I have had them in the past, getting ready to get some more.Beautiful birds. They are very independent. You need to contain them for awhile where you want them to roost. They prefer not to be penned, but if you do,give them ample room, don't cage them.Ideal has them for $2.29 per chick.I like all the longtailed breeds.I have Sumatras now.I like the way Cubalaya's carry their tail in a downward direction.Take care.

Thankyou for the fast ansewers. The problem is is that im only looking to buy a few of them like 1 male and only 3 females,I already have 2 golden phoniex females at my house so I think It would be a nice flock whats the minimum order at cackle hatcherie?I could probably buy 5 of them.

Oh also forgot to ask how are cubalayas around hawks? Will they run for cover if they see them? And would it be ok to keep them in a chicken tractor until around 3:30 and then ill let them free range?

They're great at evading predators, unless they are roosting on top of a pen and an owl carries them off.

(personal experience there)

If you raised them as young ones in a pen, and let them out when they're fully feathered they will usually go back to the pen to roost. Once they get mature, they tend to take to the trees if allowed free range. It's usually not an issue to catch them up, as they are naturally laid back in temperment.

If you want to preserve the breed, I recommend going with a breeder to obtain stock. If you just want to keep them around for foraging or try them out, then hatchery aren't bad. They're a bit on the small side and tend to be off color, which isn't a big issue with most folk.

Thanks,im going to get 1 male and 4 females how does that sound?I heard that they taks 3 years to fully mature but when do they start laying eggs? Also how do you like my new avatar lol its a cubalaya

1 male to 4 females is a nice ratio. You should not have any fertility problems.

They start laying around 8 months of age, 2 - 3 years for males to reach maximum size and tail growth.

I have a cubalaya in my avatar too. She's one of my gold wheaten brood hens. I recognize the one you are using, as it is posted on Feathersite's cubalaya breed page.

Ya lol Sorry for so many questions but how are they in the north?Do they need a insulated coop? Will they go broody? How good of mother are they,do you think it will be ok if I slip duck eggs under a broody hen?thanks for helping me know this breed so far there insnt too much info about them on google lol
