Hi all,

Not a major issue, but as I was doing a routine flock inspection on my hens I found this blue looking blister on my hen Sophie Germains foot. I am wondering if it is just a vein. She is appearing normal and not showing signs of pain but wanted to get your thoughts here to confirm. Thanks in advance!

1) What type of bird , age and weight 6 year old cuckoo marans hen- large heritage breed

2) What is the behavior, exactly- presenting a blue hued blister or vein on the bottom of one foot

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? I just noticed this week

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. no

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. none that I know of

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Layer pellets and fresh water freely

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Nothing as I have never seen this and not sure if it is even an issue

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? just want to check if this is normal or not normal and I can then treat

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. attached

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use sand throughout

Aw Sophie! How is it today? My first thought is that could be a bruise. Could she have jumped down from something and landed a little hard? Bruises can lead to bumblefoot, so I would keep an eye on it over the next few days and weeks. If you haven’t already, maybe check really well in that crevice right next to the purple area and be sure nothing is lodged in there.
