oh, sometimes you get these out of the cuckoo / black pen

the skin doesn't have enough melanizers. they usually lose this coloration when they molt the first set of baby feathers. however I band them a different color and do not reintroduce them to the cuckoo pen because they lack melanizers in the skin

no these are all black when they molt. the cuckoo would have a fairly distinct barring on the wings at this point
