As with all breeds it depends on where you get them from if you get cuckoo marans from a hatchery then they will be alot smaller and lay alot lighter eggs because they have been outbreed and selected for production over everything else so they will be alot smaller then if you get any kind of marans from a breeder that has non- hatchery stock. I have two Cuckoo Marans hens, hatched at the end of February, (hatchery stock) and they are big girls. They are bigger than almost everything else in my flock, except maybe the Delawares. I guess it just depends on the individual genetics of that bird. Our eggs are dark, but not as dark as they would be if they were not hatchery. Interesting that your birds are smaller.

god **** it i was sold CM's as BCM's.. i wanted the dark eggs.. what a rip off ;[

The CMs that I have came from Chicky Tocks here on BYC, not sure where she got them but her adult birds were also small.


The BCMs I got on Craigslist and supposedly they are from Davis lines, but really how much does that really tell you?

By the research I have done, any kind of Maran can produce the super dark colored eggs. Tell me if you have learned different, please. Checkout this link. It is from the marans chicken club usa. It explains the way to get the darkest egg color.
