Ok so my EE is not getting better, have had her to the vets 3 times now and no change, they charge 50-70 bucks to do the deed, even though it is a small bird. How can I do this humanely at home? I dont want to do the freezer thing or the vinegar in a box thing, Dont have the stomache to do the broom or twist and swing thing either.

Can I give her a huge does of liquid benydrl ??? Or inject her with something? This will be my first cull.

Sorry you are losing your hen. There are no completely guilt free ways of putting her out of her misery, but maybe you have a friend who is aware of gun safety rules and has a small caliber gun they could instantly end her suffering for you. She would never knew what hit her, and probably your friend would take her away to do the deed so you wouldn't have to have those memories. So sorry for your loss.

I just had to cull my bantam this morning. I suggest breaking the neck. I dug her grave and set her in the hole wrapped in a tile. Make sure the towel is tight. I pulled her body up while holding her down and kind of twisted. The body shakes afterwards but not for long.

there is a very easy way to cull / have some one do it for you / hold the hen by the head and spin it round the wait of the body will brake its neck quick or give it the chop don't shoot it if you miss it could prolong it and cause more pain, injecting it with something sounds even worse, would you know what amount to give ? I am afraid the cull part is a part of keeping hens, and I agree its not nice to have to do, but its better than watching a bird have to suffer, and cheaper than the vet, sorry to hear that you have to go down this road, and for your loss when the time comes, just think its for the grater good in the long run:(

I know this sounds very hard to do, not sure If I will be able to do it myself if/when the time comes. I am very sorry you have to go through this.

Is there any one that could do it for you, so you don't even have to see it occur? that is what I would want to do. And also know that it is humane to do the neck twist/break thing as stated on BYC. I actually watched my boyfriend try to do a similar neck break thing with a 'trout' that was inquired and he was trying to be humane ... so it is the acceptable method.

lethal injection - hmmm I personally wouldn't try that as it sounds like a long slower ordeal.

So sorry Kathy. I know you tried very hard to help her get better.

I've never had to do it, yet. But I've made up my mind to use the broomstick method, if I have to -- petting my bird to calm & reassure her, then slipping her neck under a broomstick, & signaling someone else step down on it while I simultaneously pull up on her body with ALL my strength. I will have to steel myself beforehand, to be sure I am not emotional until after she's dead, so that I can do it as quickly, and thus humanely, as possible.

Ok... I'm going to sound crazy to most of you all... but I just used a air rifle instead of all the other methods I have heard and tried. It was over instantly and I got to be emotionally detatched from it by spacing myself from the bird. I can't stomach the thought of the broomstick method but I have tried to gas chicks and that was not over fast... I snapped necks and that was over fast, but way too hands on. The air rifle is 1200fps (made for rabbit hunting) uses BBs and pellets (I used pellets) and was over as quick as I pulled the trigger.

Just a thought. It was well worth the $120 I spent on it.

I have a tool called a humane dispatcher. It looks a bit like electrical wire strippers but without the notches. You place it on the bird's neck and squeeze and it dislocates the vertebrae. A bit like neck-wringing but requires no expertise. I feel much better about culling now I know I can do it ok with this gadget. Mine I ordered online from a UK poultry outfit but I suppose US outfits carry them too. In a pinch a pair of strong secateurs works but its a lot messier obviously.
