Culled my first quail. Debrief thread.

That's the thing, four years later, he's still losing chickens and eggs. I "just haven't seen it."
Of course, there's a lot he could do to predator proof his chicken run and coop. Shotgun shells are cheaper I guess.

So... The fox has just gotten better at what a fox does? Smart fox, hide from the humans and keep taking those chickens!

these are subadult quail! No eggs for another week or two lol.

Oh! Well then they're old enough to fend for themselves and find their own way back into the brooder, and to clean up after themselves too! Darn those quails, they should know better.

My quails are 5 weeks 5 days old today :)

The funny thing was, we heard a loud bang, and my husband was coming down the stairs and saw a cascade of quail flying out of their cage. If it wasn't so stressful, I'm sure it would have been beautiful.

My husband said "THEY CAN FLY!" Hahaha. He was also surprised at how easy it was to walk up to them and pick them up. They are kind of dim lol.

Yeah I think where you live does play a huge part in how you deal with all this. I too live where it is not typical of someone to just kill their food in the backyard. Fishing is definitely more "acceptable" here than hunting though in my opinion it's the same deal. An animal dies.

By the way, your comment about newborns being murdered by spinal cord cutting really got to me. I was trying to shove that image out of my mind ahh! It sounds so horrible :(

Oh sorry about that I didn't mean to upset you
There are a lot of horrible things in the papers
More and more graphic
I'm fed up with my favorite paper because everyday they
Have some sad animal story
Oh look the baby zebra put up a brave fight until the lion but its head off
And look there is its mother devastated as it was her only baby
( that kind of thing)
I'm not sure I dare tell you the worst one I read! Don't want to upset you again
Its hrs to deal with the cruelty in this world but it good it upsets and shock you
We are in danger of becoming blaze about these horrific story's we see every day
All I can think about the babies is maybe their lives would of been so awful
That they escaped it

How any woman can do that though! Evil

Evil. Agreed.

Haha! And at least they wouldn't have gotten far either being confined in the living room. Feathers everywhere.

Once again I am late to the party. I only have 6 quail ready to kill and I have thus far chickened out of killing them, though on the other hand I can't wait to eat them. I bought the same scisors QJ showed in here earlier, and I love them, and they were indeed $15 at Wal-Mart. I will strongly caution against using them on anything bigger than a quail. I destroyed my first pair breaking up my "practice" rooster. Which we wasted a .22 on so it would be easier for me. I will post again when I get up the guts to *actually* do it.

(BTW I also noticed DC's videos were of different birds... and heads in tact. Just sayin'. And speaking of which, what are those tuxedo looking quail? Tibetan?)

tuxedo is a cross between Tibetan and pied. I believe.

Yeah, hes a vampire, he had that bird as a cocktail a bit earlier.....

The heads are intact because I have processed so many of them i can internally decapitate them while wringing their necks. It takes practice and the exact right amount of force. Too little bird is half dead, too much head comes off. You can't be unsure of your hands, you'll figure it out on your own once you've processed a bunch of them.

Tuxedos are achieved by crossing either a tibetan/rosetta/range x A&M (or english white) or golden x A&M. Golden tuxedos will always be much more white than gold.

Thanks for clarifying. If I wring them I will err on the side of too much force rather than too little. Better to have a headless bloody mess than an animal suffering.

0.o I have extra golden females.... I MUST TRY THIS.

As with any other thread I'm in, one question asked and answered, two more posed:

1. Is there a way to sex A&Ms at 4-5 weeks?

2. Is range the "normal" color, also called brown or pharaoh?
