Culling a long time rooster. Is there a better time of day?

Mine comes comes at me when I open the run for them to free range, feeding them, giving them water, even when I’m giving him treats. These are over the last month. Once they heal they leave large scars with a lump underneath.
Get that knife ready, a clean table, and a pot of hot water on a slow boil NOW!

You can catch him off the roost tonight and put in a cage for overnight if it's too late right now. Commit to what you need to do. When you pull him out of the cage, get a firm hold of his legs and massage a bit under the wings right before you do what you need to do with the knife. That will calm him down momentarily so he doesn't flog you before you pay him back for all the blood he's drawn.

You could consider doing it yourself. Considering how much time you must be spending to treat those repeated injuries...
I can’t do it. I will still cry when it happens even though I know it’s for the best. I don’t eat chicken anymore. Lol. But I did make sure to find someone to take the meat before I made plans to cull him.

I’m sorry that this is so hard for you. Killing life is tough and it makes me cry whenever I even do so much as step on a bug or see a dead deer on the side of the road. Life is a precious thing and a lot of people feel wrong taking it away from something.

Just remember this is for the good of you and your flock. That rooster has lived an excellent life so far and he deserves to be killed peacefully and quickly.

The sooner you get the deed done the sooner you can stop worrying about him hurting you or your flock.

I’m sorry that he was mean enough for it to have to come to this. Hugs.
:hugs

I'll bet your husband or family members will eat chicken. A mean rooster tastes good if you put the carcass in the refrigerator in a pot with milk or buttermilk overnight or for two days and then use the pressure cooker or slow cooker.

The first time I slaughtered a chicken was hard for me, too. It was a mean rooster that would come after me.

I had a situation where one of three or four barred rock mutt roosters was flogging me when I went out to the chicken yard. I had to do something, though, because after once or twice I didn't want my legs to be injured again. I didn't want to be afraid to go out and feed the other chickens.

Once one or two of those roosters were gone, things were great in the chicken yard...until we had a raccoon attack, which is another story...I think we propped up the hardware cloth industry for a little while!

The best time is NOW. Stop making excuses, or having pity on yourself and/or the bird. If you have time to post on BYC, you have the time to go out there and off him real quick. There is no way I would let my feelings get in the way of killing that little monster. Attacking kids, and he is still breathing, are you for real???

We rarely have kids here so it’s just me. He hasn’t attacked anyone other than me for a very long time. I am for real. He protects my chickens so it has been hard for me to make this decision.

I'm afraid that this is beyond my grasp.

Taking the pictures of your legs and your repeated statements into consideration I begin to wonder if that is some kind of modern flagellantism? 🤔

Do you hold yourself in suchlike contempt that you think of your well-being less important than the roosters?

I have put in over a years worth of time, training, and effort in to him. He has been mean for a long time. It has not been cheap or quick.
I didn't mean to offend if I did. I meant that I see why people recommend culling. I'm not familiar with roosters. And I understand their explanation of trying but it not working out. And depending on someones circumstances they might come to deciding to cull them sooner than others because of time constraints, having children in the area, etc.
Reading over you're message again I think I might have read it wrong. You're just saying that culling is a good choice? Sorry if I'm not making sense, my wording is not so good sometimes.

Wow! Well I had to google what that was. No I don’t like it and I don’t get gratification from. And too get very emotionally person I don’t think much of myself. I am a doormat in all areas of my life. But thank you for making me feel dirty and even more crappy about myself.
