Culling - Is This Humane?

Everyone is allowed to feel as they do- however, lets all understand that we humans need to treat everything humanely.
Freezing/drowning...not humane. If its illegal to do it to a puppy or kitten it should be illegal to do it to a chicken.

Yes, but it's also illegal to guillotine a kitten or puppy, snap its neck, hit it in the head with a rock.

Anyway, not sure what I would do. A vet if at all possible because that's what I'm used to, being an owner of dogs and cats and having taken that trip to the vet a number of times.

But I appreciate any anyone just trying to make it as quick and painless as possible for the animal, whatever way that may be.

Yes, actually, I AM "one of those people" who, faced with the need to kill a pet, will just "take it out back"! And proud to say it! I come from tough, country mountain stock who raise animals for food and practical purposes.

We, thankfully, have learned how to end an animal's suffering by ourselves in a quick and humane manner. We don't require anyone else to do our dirty work for us. I love and respect my animals the same as everyone else, which is why I take the responsibility for them from birth to their deaths.

I care for them each day and they live a good, happy life and they deserve to have a quick end that is not preceded by a stressful trip to an unknown place to be put to death by a stranger.

Even if I were the wealthiest person on earth I would still give my animals the courtesy and respect of giving them a good and fast ending right a their own home, by my own hands.

You folks who need help to do this are more than welcome to do so!

It is kind of sad that people have grown away from dealing with all aspects of animal husbandry. I think if more people were present and took an active part in their animal's deaths, there would be a lot less puppy mills and ill-conceived kittens littering the US.

But stating that someone doesn't deserve to have animals if they cannot "afford" to have a vet kill them is just crass. It really has nothing to do with money, but merely preference.

I've spent $800 to repair my dog's leg and another $400 when she had a severe kidney infection. These were things I could not fix for her at home. But ending her pain and suffering? This I would trust to no one but myself. She is my friend, companion and a loyal dog~
it is no wrong thing to give mercy by one's own hand if you are strong enough in your heart to do so.

On the other hand, I would not choose freezing or drowning as my choice for "humane" deaths.

well in some ways culling can be good (like putting the chick out of its misery) and bad (not giving it the chance to live). but it all depends. i guess i don't know enough about this to be debating on it but thats my opinion. i had the chance to cull one of my chicks who was really weak and had pasty butt. i didn't and instead treated her and she lives to this day.

I used to feel the same way until I actually had to take the animal care training for my research position a few years back. It is true that taking them to the vet, letting them take responsibility for ending their life, and paying your bill is more asthetically pleasing but the 'shot' is not as peaceful and painless as people want to believe.

Taking responsibility for ending an animals suffering is part of owning animals. Just because someone else chooses a different method than you does not make them irresponsible or cheap.

I know the pros and cons of almost every method of euthansia, I have seen them used, and for my research work I routinely euthanise using the method the vets use. I know which is the quickest and most 'humane' so that's the method I use for my animals.

It does 'cost' something, but it's a cost I pay--I don't ask my animals to pay it for me.

Yep here we go again one of my pet objections to all animal husbandry and pet care. The Anthroprmorphism is one of the most tragic things in all of this. I have no objection if someone chooses to spend a hundred bucks to put down a chicken, none whatsoever. I do object to being referred to as barbaric for choosing to use what I consider to be a humane way of handling an unpleasant task.

I have respect for those who can do what is necessary themselves. I choose to have a vet put down large animals because I dont have the strenth to do it myself. It is not a judgement just a choice. I choose to handle poultry myself because I am confident I can do it quickly and painlessly. A little less judgemental please

I put my own animals down, including my dogs and other pets when the need finally arises (thank goodness that's not illegal here!), for one simple reason . . . I can, using a gun or scissors, cause a fairly quick and painless death without having to put the animal through the stress of a car trip and a new environment with new and scary faces hovering over it. Instead they get to stay at home, surrounded by the familiar with people they love and trust . . . I can't honestly see how that isn't superior to a vet visit, actually, but I won't insult those who choose that route.
Also, I used to volunteer at shelters and I live in a town full of veterinary students, and through that association I've learned that being "put to sleep" is not at all as comfortable as that euphemism would imply, and certainly not superior to several other forms of killing. It does relieve some of the guilt a person may feel about having to kill their own animal, but other than that it's not any better than a quick head crush, for example. Euthanasia is one of those things that are largely misunderstood by the general public, and while it's not a bad death I would never say it's the best death possible for a pet. Really, though, unless someone is employing the use of blatantly cruel means to kill an animal, such as starvation, drowning, or freezing, there's really no need to quibble over methods.

Clearly I need to read Beekissed posts first . . . said pretty much what I said in a much more convincing and clear manner, I think.
