I'm sorry. I'm just not sure i believe that article completly. The peoples heads blinking is from the nerve synapses (sp?).. NOT from being conscious....the biting...again..the nerves still active for those few seconds after death.(dosent mean the person was still alive OR could feel a thing..because they cant....) And the blush on the face that had been slapped....well..if the persons skin hasnt mottled yet from death...if there is still blood close to the skin surface (which would happen in instant deaths...)...that explains the blush when someone slapped the skin. the person didnt know it was slapped..

the blood was simply still close to the skins surface...

One quick thought on the CO2 thing. CO2 will kill, but it is not comfortable. Anyone who dives knows that the uncomfortable feeling in your chest when you hold your breath is due to CO2 build up, rather than a lack of oxygen. Try it: hold your breath, then when you start feeling really bad, exhale and you'll see what I mean. Has anyone considered car exhaust? CO is an entirely different story. It causes irreparable damage, but no discomfort. I haven't needed to do this, but if I did, it's what I would try. Some really good comments on this thread.
