I just came back from my coop and I took a good look at my flock the reds are good but the rocks look awful with the exception of a few. I have one that has a swollen eye and has had one since I got her in october, I have several with pale combs, a really old one that is probably laying no eggs, and one that is very small, what do you think I should do? Should I do it now or wait til spring?

If you have RIRs and BRs, you have what it takes to make black sex links. Would you like to replace your BRs with them? What kind of rooster do you have?

How old are the ones with pale combs? Could be they just need time to develop. No two develop at the same rate. Could be one that lays later might also be the last one to quit laying.

They are two years old they have just got out of the molt

I find it easier to process when it is cold. You don't have to fight with the flys, and sweat dripping down your face. You also do not have to rush quite so much as it is already cold so they are not going to spoil just sitting there.

just coming out of moult, they normally have paler combs and waddles.

it is up to you, when, where, how and why you cull.

But winter is alittle easier in the cool it quickly department.
