Cups vs Nipples??

Yeah. I saw those cups. The spring loaded ones where the weight of the cup being full closes the valve?

Probably a better design than the yellow lever. Research indicated that the little lever can get wedged open with debris, and water free flows. I almost bought some of the cups like you are talking about, but elected to just give the horizontal nipples a shot. Fingers crossed!

I recently got the rent a coop cups off of amazon that you attach to a bucket. And my chickens caught right on. I like them because they don’t have the little pedal that they have to peck inside to fill them (most reviewers said it took them a while to catch on and some never caught on) The cups I got simply get lighter as the water is drank and it automatically refills itself. So far no issues!

Yeah... I was about to go that route, but the collection of dirt turned me off. After reading all the good reviews on the horizontal nipples, I elected to give them a shot. Hopefully if they don't work, the wholes drilled in my pipe will accept the up/down cup design like that of Rent A Coop. If not, I can always put new pipes in above ground.

not sure about frozen nipples, but we'll wait to discuss that topic in about 6 months...
I haven't installed them yet, but I'm going with the nipple system in a few weeks. Right now they drink about a gallon every two days for 6 pullets. But I'll be installing a rain water system to fill a 5 gallon bucket with nipples. I went with the nipples due to the lower maintenance.

I used nipples for a couple years and they often leaked. So this year I'm going to try the cups which is fed by my rain barrel and here in Vermont, we never run out of water in the barrel. I've had as many as 21 chickens, this year I plan to raise ducks for meat and eggs.

I like side mount nipples on a 3 gal bucket. I used to have bottom mount, but with side mount, you can set the bucket DOWN when you are filling water bottles and buckets.

The hens don't seem to care which so long as I fill them regularly. I hang the bucket from one of their fences so that it's at the right height.

This system has been working on my coop for nearly 20 years now. There are 3 more Nipples on the front of the coop(I can't find the Pic) and a couple inside as well. I leave a couple pvc joints not glued so when it does freeze here in Georgia those joints expand and usually poop apart and the pipes don't bust. I just have to wait till it thaws out an put the whole thing back together. We have very few days when it freezes and I use waters I can rotate out with clean water daily when it happens, 4 or 5 days a year is no big deal.

Nice. I'm doing something very similar. Not moving roof run off, though.

I've had vertical nipples in the past and wasn't impressed. Just ordered some cups and horizontal nipples to try out. Just waiting on the mail now.
