Good morning all
Just a curious Question as my chickens look healthy so Im not to worried just curious
I have 3 chickens all about 5 months old so about 4 weeks away from laying. 1 pure Sussex and 2 Sussex / Rhode island red cross's, Its summer hear but a wet one and I've notest, well what I think is that there not really eating a lot. There are full of energy and out all day up and down the various structures and foraging in the grass in there avery. Its about 3m x 6m so about 18m2 for 3 of them. They get a cup of mixed seed scattered to keep them busy which they seam to eat by the evening and a good helping of layer pellets in there feeder.probabuly about 2/3 cups worth. they used to eat that in a day or day and half at most a few weeks a go but now its taking 3 days plus. also I think there drinking less but i do see them drinking.
dose this sound as if there eating enough for there age
Many thanks Murph

There are probably two factors affecting your birds here. The first, as others have mentioned, is that it is summer and your girls are eating grass, weeds, insects etc, so they won't need as much feed as usual. The other thing to consider is that younger chicks eat huge amounts of feed in order to keep growing and developing. As they become adults, their body weight starts to stabilise, and they don't need to eat as much (consider how much a teenager can eat without putting on excess weight, compared to someone aged 25 or 30 years old!)
