That is good to hear something positive about the Rhode Island Red I find them beautiful!I have to defend Rhode Island Reds -- at least to the extent that my one RIR was beautiful and not at all mean. In fact, she accepted the Buff Orp as the leader of the hens and made no attempt to unseat the queen. Ginger Rogers may have been the exception, but I found her utterly charming and a bit on the shy side.

That is what I hear, I love the heritage RIR. Where could I possibly find some?Find yourself some heritage RIRs. They are big, gorgeous dark red colored, and are very mellow sweet birds. Stay away from the hatchery birds they are not the same as the heritage reds. Even most of the heritage red roosters are very mellow tempered.
Wow some more to consider black sex links and barred rocks! What about Dominique as well?I have a RIR and she’s the last of that breed that I’ll have. She pecks, is mean, and is super broody. I have to remove her from the nesting box at least every few days.
I did have a Barred Rock and she was a great chicken. She was calm and sweet and a good layer.
I also have a Black Star (sexlink) which is a cross of a Barred Rock and RIR. She’s my best chicken right now. She’s an excellent layer of big eggs and she’s friendly and never broody.
