I have two hens (hopefully not roosters) that I bought from a farmer in SC. I am new to this but was really curious as to what kind of chicken they are so i can read a bit more about them in particular to know what to expect as they grow.
Pictures below of the two chicks. I forgot to ask their age, but after reading more I believe they are around 6 weeks.

They look like Polish chickens. It's very hard to tell males from females at this young age. They could be the white crested black variety.

Yep, white crested black Polish. If they are the same age, I would guess you have a pair (1st one pullet and 2nd cockerel) based on the difference in the way and speed they are feathering in.

Oh no... I hope the second one is not a rooster, my neighbors would not appreciate that at all.
I don't know if they are the same age, so I guess I will just have to wait it out. thanks for your input! I am so excited to have these little guys. I have been asking my husband for years to get chickens and he said no. When he saw a sign alongside the road "chicks for sale" and told me to buy them I thought I should take him up before he changed his mind. Otherwise I would have researched them a bit more in advance. they are doing really well, eating, drinking, chirping and pecking around. Seem to be happy and healthy. Thanks again!

loyatricia !

I hope you have a wonderful time with your chicken adventure. I haven't owned them, but I think Polish are very cute and have a lot of character! They're on my really long list of breeds to add. My hubby is very patient and our original flock of 6 is now 12, including a roo and three babies my broody hatched a month ago. I am having to restrain myself from hatching any more chicks they are so cute!

You may find the neighbors don't mind. I can legally have roos but want to be a good neighbor, too. I told my closest one that we had one and he was a little suspicious at first. I told him to let me know if he was ever bothered by the crowing (which starts between 4 and 5 each morning). I put up sound board in the coop to help with noise, but you can still hear him with the windows open. I asked the neighbor this spring if he was still ok and he said that he found it charming as it reminded him of times past when he grew up on a farm (he's retired). I haven't even bribed him with eggs!

Good luck!

My neighbors are not going to take to kindly to crowing at all. Our town ordinence is actually set so we are NOT allowed to have them because we are just shy of 1 acre, but we have them set back and out of sight. It will only take one busy body to call the town and I will have to get rid of them, but I have two friends who already said they would take them in happily and add to their flock. I really am crossing my fingers that the one neighbor who would be bothered never gets a peek at them, but of course they are the closest to us. They don't like dogs so I sure know they aren't going to be wild about chickens.

Bummer. I am so glad you have homes lined up, just in case. When my roo crowed for the first time it sounded like a gutteral ahh-aha-ahhhh like my daughter was sobbing or something. WIth a little sebright I just raised sounded like a sneeze and has matured into a rusty-spring on a gate sound. Not sure what a polish would sound like at first since they are sorta in between sizes from the two I know of first-hand.

I guess you'll be needing to look for companions for the little polish girl so she doesn't get lonely

I am still hopeful its a hen. I will post a pic to the thread in a week or so as he/she develops and get some more feedback.
