Curious on what happens to your older poultry?

My older hens will always have a place here on the hill. The 5 year old lt brahmas I have at the present time, have never looked better. This was their first winter without additional light for laying, so the girls could rejuvenate their systems. It really makes a difference giving the flock a rest, in my opinion.

I'm sure they aren't done laying yet. Longer days will start them up again. I can see a couple of the combs and waddles becoming more red already.

I mean my chickens are great poo spreaders. If they see a animal tail lift up, they are right there to spread the poo as soon as it hits the ground. They spread it until it looks like dirt. I haven't had to use a poo fork in years.... That alone is worth their weight in.... well.... manure & bug control to me.. LOL I always make sure to add sweetfeed in the animals pelleted feed... so the chickens can do their job. i started out with peafowl first , but found out they are picker - through-ers, not really scratchers... LOL

I can keep my older layers in the same coop as my breeders- since they lay different color eggs. If I want to hatch pure breeds- I just hatch the blues

I did this with my wellies & EEs too. Having the different colors has made things so much simpler for me.

The old girls are still great foragers, and yard candy.We need as much bug control as we can get in the woods!

We have a few special favorites we are going to keep. The rest of the older ladies we will sell off. I already have some chicks in the nursery growing and will be hatching more as replacements. After rearranging and dividing my coop into sections for breeding we came the same conclusion as HappyMtn to keep the older ones in with the EEs. That is the biggest section and will be the easiest to determine whose eggs are whose.
