I was just wondering if chickens normally will always roost in the same place/order? My little ones have been doing it and was just wondering if that is a pecking order thing as my larger more dominant hens are on the bottom, always lined up the same and the others are up top, including the newest and shyest as well as my cockerel. It's cute to always know who's going to be where during the nightly head count.

Yes, that is normal. I have moved hens from one coop to another and they have to find their "place". But if they make the mistake of getting in another hens spot, they will be scolded. Unless, that is, they higher up in the pecking order. The lower in order they are, the less likely they are to have a permanent spot picked out. A few of my "weaker" hens and roosters will change spots with one another, but they never ever try to roost on the dominate side of the coop.

And then one night they all have new spots. They do like to roost in the same preferred stop next to the same hens. Till something stirs the Order. And then ...

That normal. :D although, mine RARELY sleep in the same spot. I have nooooo idea why.

Mine have there roosting buddies but not spcific spots... Ywo of my hens are always sharing the same little roost bar and my other 3 huddle on the larger one... The may mix up the order in which they sit but its always the same group on their respective roosts
