My boyfriend and I recently decided to give in to our desire to buy some chickens. We're out in eastern Oregon and as soon as the weather started to take a turn for the better we pursued some local feed stores, and hatcheries. We know so far that our chicks are all Cochin bantams, save the one Polish we adopted, but we're stumped as to their actual colour types and genders (if possible).

The pictures should go in order, as to when we first brought them home and up to today.

We believe the "grey," with no markings one is a sort of Blue (a Self?); the "brown" one we think is a Partridge; the "grey," that looks like the brown one, we think is a Duckwing. As to the yellow, now much more White, we believe is just that.

First time cochin bantam owner and first time to post on this site/board, so any help is greatly appreciated.

ok I searched the cochin breeds and the gray one is called a "lemon Blues" it's head is brown, while it's body is grey. very pretty. and the white one is just a white cochin. not sure about the brown one though.

The one with the most feathering looks more like a D'Uccle than a Cochin. The puffy cheeks will be the beard it shall bear. As for the greyish one, I think maybe a Silver Laced one.

But rather than give you all my guesses go to feathersite.com and go to their chick section for cochins and you can see for yourself what different ones should look like. also, McMurray and several other hatcheries show what the chicks usually look like. And I mean USUALLY, they don't always know they should look the same as the rest of the chicks of their breed and you can find some variation.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help y'all. We took the suggestions, did more research (Feathersite is great!) and have come to the more definitive conclusions on our chickens colors. There is great reason to believe that the grey is a legit Blue, we hoped for a lemon blue but his head feathers are coming in really dark. The chick that looked like a grey partridge is most definitely a silver laced, though she is still filling in so it's hard to say for sure.

We're pretty sure that now we have two roosters (the white and blue) and two hens (partridge and silver).

Do you have any updated pictures? I am not seeing a blue cochin in those pics at all... is one of them really turning out blue???
