and ended up with WAY more than they intended to? Tell me how many you thought you wanted when you started, and how many you actually have now!

I wanted four. I now have 22!

We were only going to get 3 hens and a rooster from someone and then (a little while later) we noticed he still had them. We ended up buying them only because the chickens were in pretty bad living conditions...We ended up getting rid of all but 4 hens (the original 3 + an extra one) and the original rooster. Then we ordered chicks and we will see if we will really keep only 5 of them

...Technically the dutch we want to keep counts for 1/4th of a chicken, our 4 cochins are only 2 chickens and our LF brahma counts for like 1 1/2...only 3 1/4 chickens technically...maybe keep like 2 fayoumi (1 chicken) and a wyandotte (1 chicken) so who cares if we are 1/4 over ....sigh...chicken math

I wanted 4 or 5. Ordered 16 because I wanted to save on shipping. Meanwhile, 5 hatched while farm-sitting and friend told me to take them home. Kept 2 of those 5, gave back 3. Then another friend gave me some eggs to try hatching, hatched 7. Friend felt bad and gave me 4 more. Needed to have a better hatch rate, tried again and the second hatch was 13. Addicted to hatching, bought own incubator and hatched out 18. I was up to 60 chicks at one point. Now at 55 (I think!)
