curled toes....what went wrong?

Out of a batch of 20 chicks, 3 of them hatched having curled toes. Is this genetic or did something I did cause this?

I find that it is related to being unevenly cooked in the incubator. I had a few where the temperatures dropped a bit and I might've forgotten to turn the eggs once or twice. When I'm diligent, I find that those type of issues don't come up.
