"Freaks: You're One of Us"

Trending on Netflix now, this German-made (filmed in Berlin) movie is listed as being action/comedy/fantasy. It was pretty entertaining and involving superhero-type folks, but not in the Marvel sense.

Without giving too much away, a young fry cook is pretty much bullied by her boss, her menial job, her husband without a good support system. She meets a mysterious stranger who jogs her mind and sets her on a quest to discover her true self and powerful talents. She starts to assert herself and then discovers she is not alone!

Sort of a buddy film, but not really. There's interesting psychological takes on personalities and equally interesting consequences. I'd not call it a comedy film, either, although there are a few odd-to-a-laugh situations.

There was a prequel to this film called "Freaks" and this movie has a definite setup for a sequel. DH and I both enjoyed it and, of course, trying to figure out what our own superpowers would be should we be so blessed.

Thanks for the review!

"Antebellum" just dropped on standard (not premium streaming) Redbox today. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to rent it as I'm working the polls today and escorting the van of votes to the ballot warehouse, so a late night.

"Antebellum"

Much anticipated movie and Janelle Monae -- a powerhouse of talent -- did not disappoint in her dual role. "Antebellum" flips between a Confederate Civil War setting and modern times and -- like "The Sixth Sense" -- provides plenty of Easter Eggs (hints, symbolic and otherwise) throughout the movie until it all ties together at the end. Great additional characters provided by Gabourey Sidibe, Jack Huston and Jena Malone.

Inspired by a bad dream turned into a short story of one of its writers, the movie is produced by Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick -- "Get Out", "Us" and 'BlackkKlansman" -- so a Blacks-in-peril plot was anticipated. Add to this a resume that includes "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" "Donnie Darko" "The Oath" and you can anticipate a tad of horror, to boot. The movie, overall, felt kind of like the old movie "West World" but far more sadistic and not for the faint of heart for the person-on-person cruelty inflicted. However, like "The Sixth Sense," you'll want to view it again to catch all the hints that you didn't get until you got it.

"Alone" (2020 horror movie; NOT the one with the lady and the trailer)

Redbox had a 2-for-1 deal, so picked this up as the second film. It seems to be a ripoff of "#Alive" made in Korea the same year...and the latter, interestingly, is actually a better done movie.

Apocalypse pandemic zombie virus isolates a person to their apartment for weeks on end leaving the sole survivor with feelings of insanity. (Current day living with Covid situation renders this scenario not unplausible nor very scary, IMHO.) Then, discovering other survivors, it turns into an action movie of bringing folks together while dodging "the screamers" who are unnaturally quick and agile, but not too effective in noshing.

Starring Tyler Posey and Summer Spiro with a wonderful cameo by Donald Sutherland. Tried to figure out where it was filmed (high-density apartment complex), but no information anywhere on that.

Birds of Prey and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

I enjoyed this movie. It was very entertaining and fun. Very comedic in a dark sort of way. But it had several issues that bothered me:

Plot holes, costume changes from nowhere, only 1 hyena, and filming errors. Huntress had a character that was pretty lame and boring. And while this is supposed to be part of the whole women's empowerment type of movie it fell flat to me when you had a bunch of women trying to save a child. Plus with the over the top masogeny of the villain just left me feeling pandered to. In addition it felt like Harley was not truly emancipated as they only showed further that she can't "stand alone".

Overall it is a fun movie as far as being entertained. It doesnt go beyond that. It doesnt push itself too far or try to make a societal statement. It just is what it is. It has a lot of humor in it but it jumps around a lot like pulp fiction. Overall I give it 7 out of 10 regardless of the issues with it. The costume design is really cool, cinematography is beautifully done and FINALLY a consistent brooklyn accent from Harley. I was really worried about this film because of the sour taste Suicide Squad left with me. Harley has always been my fav DC character and when she could not keep the accent in SS I was very miffed

"Fatman"

Finally a holiday movie about Santa Claus that isn't dripping in schmaltz. In fact, quite the opposite. "Fatman" is about Santa, but a Santa few of us would've imagined who swears, drives a Ford pickup to do errands, has sex, eschews the red outfit, drinks Jack Daniels with Alka-Seltzer, who despises the Government, and seems pretty ordinary despite his magical powers, but a Santa who nonetheless still delivers gifts handmade by elves or lumps of coal to the boys and girls of the world. And it is some of those evil coal-receiving ne'er do wells that want to take out Santa!

Husband and I both enjoyed this gritty assassin-based movie if not for the novelty, then for the over the top performances by Mel Gibson and Walton Goggins, and a steady performance by Marianne Jean-Baptiste as the voice-of-reason Ruth a/k/a Mrs. Cringle. Good does triumph over evil and, yes, reindeer do fly....along with lots of bullets and a couple of explosions at Santa's Workshop.

Definitely not a film for the kiddies (unless you forever want to mar them.) View this movie with an open mind and you will be entertained.

(Out on Redbox DVD)
