Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Today we saw "Being the Ricardos" - I'll go 3 stars, and the Princess goes 4 stars on this movie. It was a good afternoon's entertainment.

Thanks for the review!
Looking forward to "Being the Ricardos" on Prime, dropping there 12/21. :)
I will keep a look out for it!

"Cop Shop"

Just dropped at Redbox, this Gerard Butler film has a definite 1970's feel to it starting from the opening credits on. Set in Nevada (but filmed in New Mexico), it's a shoot-'em-up drama about two mysterious men taken into custody at a mid-desert police station/outpost and the cat-and-mouse games that ensue between captives and staff, the latter being none-too-bright with a complement of doofuses (doofi?) employed therein. I had low expectations for this movie, but it was actually far better than anticipated. Suspenseful.

(A minor technical annoyance for me was the mispronunciation of the fingerprint data system -- IAFIS -- which universally is known just as AFIS and pronounced A-FIS. How they said it is just a head scratcher.)

Starring Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, Alexis Louder. Directed by Joe Carnahan. Rated R for violence and pervasive language. 1 hour 47 minutes.

"The Card Counter"

This feels very much like a film noire, but only if "Taxi Driver" could be considered as such. In any event, labeled as a drama/thriller. It's two vastly different stories intersecting in one character, a semi-professional under-the-radar card playing gambler who gets recruited into the WSOP tournaments while mentoring a petulant young man who he has remote ties to. Kind of a VERY dark slice of life story.

Directed by Paul Schrader (who co-wrote "Taxi Driver" "Raging Bull" "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Bringing out the Dead" for Martin Scorcese, who -- coincidentally -- produced this movie). Starring Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem DaFoe and set amidst the casinos of the East Coast. Rated R and runs 1 hour 52 minutes.

Just finished "The Matrix: Resurrections". If you're a fan you will enjoy it a lot. There's a ton of fan service in it. If you have not watched the 3 previous movies, you will have a hard time keeping up. Odds are though, if you're planning on seeing this, youv'e seen the others so it'll be fine.

Speaking as a fan, the fan service and easter egg content was on point, and the general premise they were aiming for was well represented (consistent messaging on theme in all the Matrix movies there). I thought it might have been a bit forced, and I would like to have seen some better backstory development on some of the new characters. I also have some suspicions about the pacing of the film, and we will see if I'm right on that over time (no spoilers here).

4/5 stars. Do recommend.
