Cut Foot

Waddles, my duck cut her foot about 2 days ago. It was bleeding, and I am not sure what to do. I am boiling water to cool down and dip her foot in. She is going to the vet next thursday.

im not an expert but that looks like bumblefoot, try treating it before it spreads further and causes issues, i’m sure someone else on here with more knowledge on this will help you

She is suffering from pododermatitis (bumblefoot). Treatment for pododermatitis tends to consist of soaking the core in either Epsom salt water or an antiseptic mixture to soften the scab and allow easier excavation of the eschar. After the area has been soaked for a while, you can attempt to cut/peel some of the scab off with a pair of tweezers, and a scalpel. If you can get the core out, apply firm pressure to squeeze any caseous material or puss, lavage with an antiseptic, and pack the tissue with an antibacterial ointment. If you experience hemorrhaging cutting into the tissue, stop, apply firm pressure with a dry cloth until hemostasis is achieved, and continue further.

Afterward, apply non-stick padding to the foot, and wrap vet wrap around to prevent reinfection of the tissue until healed.

Depending on how it looks afterward, you may consider antibiotics given how far progressed the core is. Many do this at home, but if you wish to see a vet, they could likely get it done in a more efficient manner.

Bumblefoot is often correlated with unsanitary, and hard grounds promoting ulceration and flaking to the epidermis allowing bacterial penetration into the tissue. Attempts to provide a clean pen, and provide cushioning can prevent further problems.

Thanks for the information. I am NOT an expert with ducks, so I would totally mess that up. We are taking her to the vet next Thursday , so I am sure they could take care of it. I could NOT!!!
