cut grass for litter/bedding?

I use up all my grass clippings in the chicken run. Also place in coop. I just place it fresh cut, but do not exceed 4 inches deep. It dries without starting to compost. If it would be left in a pile, decomposition would start quickly. The chickens turn it over as they scratch thru it. Never encountered mold issues. I also use hay rather than straw as bedding when supply of grass runs out. Fall, winter, early spring. Chickens scratch thru it as well. I use alfalfa and timothy hay. I suppose they do eat some of it. Never had any digestive issues with my chickens in the 20+years I kept chickens. (I only keep chickens as pets and numbers are small)
I agree with Ol Grey Mare and her post. I also agree with lomine that climate is a factor.
I live in the Midwest and summers are generally not too wet. July and August tend to be dry. I have dried cut grass on my driveway to save for later use. Few days and I have homemade hay.
