Entry #1: Starla and Nance
Our Barnevelder pullet (right), Nance, has had a rather traumatizing start to life and is very timid. She watched her sisters get taken/eaten by hawks at 7 weeks old, and the hawk also grabbed and dropped her, leaving her with horrible, deep puncture wounds and all the toes on one foot broken. She's very tough and healed from all of it, but is still an extremely nervous girl.
Every night, our Salmon Faverolles, Starla, lets Nance cuddle up under her wing. Starla also sticks by her during the day, while all the other hens ignore her or try to assert their dominance in the pecking order.
I realize this may not win due to the quality, but it was the best I could do since this only happens at night! Starla and Nance are shaping up to be a truly inseparable couple of friends.
