Okay so I just want to make a disclaimer: I AM IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM GOING TO DO THIS.

I watched a tik tok about a lady who cuts her chickens flight feathers because they like to fly over her fence into her neighbors back yard and her neighbor has three dogs that are known to kill chickens.
Now to me, that just seems like a cruel thing to do. After all, they are birds and they do like to spread their wings. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

keeping your animals contained on your property seems like a responsible thing to do.

furthermore, keeping your chickens from certain death seems the opposite of cruel.
Cutting their flight feathers though? Birds like to fly even though chickens don’t get but a couple feet off the ground.

if they get high enough off the ground to clear the fence and get eaten by the neighbor’s dogs, then yes.

unless, of course, you’re keeping chickens only as a source of dinner for the dogs. then by all means let them fly.

We have clipped the flight feathers of our smaller/more wild birds. We have netting now, so we don’t have to do it anymore, but if it was between clipping their feathers or letting them get slaughtered by some random dogs, the answer would be to just clip their wings. Every time.

I would’ve built a higher fence
