...I havnt really read all the other posts ...but i just wanted to give my imput .....we have two large dogs and one takes a two man team ....we poop him out on a long walk first and then have him lay down and one person does the trimming while the other person feeds him his kibble ...one piece at a time and praises him at the same time ...when he was younger I guess he has a bad experience at nail trimming ..or hes turned us into suckers lol .so we started with chicken hotdogs first ...cut up in little tiny bits....Have a good day ....coming home tomorrow !!! Salut

I give my dogs a big bone to chew on when i do their nails. They kinda fidgit and move around alot so the treat helps to keep them in one spot. While they are chewing like crazy and distracted i just grab the nail/paw and take the tips off quickly...if they still start to fidgit..i just use my mean mommy voice and tell them to STAY... and they generally stay put...with a pout on their face.

then when we are done i give them big goofy praise to let them know they are good dogs...so far this has worked for me.
ooh, i use the dog toe nail clipper things (which i hate!)... i want to try the pedi paw..but i'm afraid that the noise would make them more scared... i dont know..i may try it.

QuailHollowP&P :

I leave 1/4" of nail. It takes 2 minutes. My dogs don't budge. I've been doing this since they were pups. Not a big deal. - and no, there is no "abnormal growth". As a matter of fact, because I have kept them so short, they practically don't bleed anymore because the vein has receeded. Just like it should.

Long tonails can get caught, or worse, *ruin* the feet of a dog. It causes more long-term pain for them when they older, as the entire tendon and bone structure of the foot and pastern can weaken when the nails are no longer trimmed back.

Since the quick has receded it is ok it is like trimming any other nail. But to go and trim a nail that the quick is all the way out should never be done unless the dog is sedated or under. The pain can traumatize some to nail trimming. When you first commented it sounded different.
