Cutting roots

I’ve gotten into gardening, and today, when I realized that my grid-grown sunflower saplings roots where weak, I decided to move them to soil. I only have two, and I made the dumb mistake of trying to pull one of the saplings out, resulting in barely any roots left on it. The next one I decided to cut out of the grid, and of course, karma decided to do something else, and I mistakingly cut the actual roots off the sapling. Will the roots grow back, or will the roots grow new stems..or are they just garbage?

Try putting the stems in water and see if they grow roots. If they do, plant them in some dirt. If they don't, well, they wouldn't have done so in the dirt anyway. I don't think the roots that are in the dirt will regrow plants, though. Not sure, but I don't think so.

Thank you very much, I’ll try that.

Are we talking the annual sunflowers or perennial? Annual sunflowers won’t come back from the roots but the perennial kind might. It will take a while if they do and I’d be surprised if you got blooms this year from any that do. Either way you can try rooting them if they are still young. If they are older and already have large buds or blooms it will be harder to get them to root. If it does have buds pinch them off when you try to root it. If they are annual sunflowers a packet of seed doesn’t cost much and it would probably be quicker and easier than trying to root them.
