I am getting my first batch if CX tomorrow. I have never had them before. When I get regular standard breed chicks , I use pine shavings in the brooder. Can I use pine shavings with the CX ? I am wondering because they have such a large appetite I don't know if they will eat the shavings and their food. What do you use ?

Shavings, just like layer chicks. I usually start them on paper towels with a layer of shavings under the towels. Then, after the first day, remove the paper towels and they should be just fine.

Ok thank you so much for your quick response ! I will do just that.

They are so messy and poop so much, I found it easier to use the ABM pellets. (used for horses I guess?) It was much more absorbent than pine shavings. Of course, it depends on how many you will be brooding too. They are hot little buggers too, so they don't need as much heat, and they'll be off heat before "normal" chicks.

I will be brooding 25 meat birds. I will have to look into those horse pellets. Thank you for the information!
