I have an Americana about 3yrs old, she has had this cyst for sometime and now today it's larger. Does anyone know what it is exactly? Should I put her down? She is not laying, thinning down, I usually have to help take her off the roost in the am she doesn't seem to get off by herself. Could also be starting to molt. Any ideas?

The eye looks good. Is the pupil larger or smaller than the other eye? Does her pupil react to light? Shine a flashlight into her eye if you have to to see if her eye reacts to light.

If she is getting thin, not eating? Three is old for some egg layers. If you put her in a separate pen, maybe where she could still see her flock, give her her own food dish and water dish, and see what happens. Sometimes the other birds keep one from eating.

Pupil looks normal, I'll have to flash some light to see how she reacts. I have two other hens that's have eye infections on left eye, redish, lid looks bunny and eye closes every now and then. Treating with terramycin ointment not sure if pecked or infected. Here is sweaty see her eye is closed at moment. Anyone have any other ideas?

How is the coop? Is the litter dry, or is there any smell of ammonia? Fallbrook is pretty dry and hot, have they been very hot? Just thinking that stress could bring on infection in a flock.

The first chicken looks simply like it has a cyst. Does it feel hard? I had a rooster with a hard similar-looking cyst that did not get bigger, and except for partial vision impairment from the cyst, he got along fine.
The second hen pictured definitely looks like a sinus infection, maybe mycoplasma or coryza. Is there an odor? Is there any sneezing or breathing problems? The pus inside the eye needs to be removed for the Terramycin eye ointment to work. I would flush it with saline and use QTips or tweezers, or try to pop it out. Tylan 50 injectable used orally or as an injection can help treat symptoms, but MG and coryza are carrier diseases. Here is a thread by someone who had the same problem:

I keep my coop very clean and dry, however I have a squirt bottle w/water & bleach I use to clean the poop off roost or walls in the morning w:a sponge it drys right up. I noticed in last few days several of my other girls have dark spots in the wattles, I believe this is dry fowl pox. I had it last year as well and it went away. Most of my hens are 6 mo old. I have 20 total hens and 5 out of the 20 are about 3yrs old. I have been reading about fowl pox it does effect the eyes.

I have been cleaning her eye w/sailine water and then applying Terramycin ointment twice a day. There is no order, sneezing or breathing problems w/any of the hens as I do spend a lot of time with them and would have noticed. As for the cyst on 'toasty' it's rather hard and I really don't think I can do much for her.
Thanks so much

BTW really enjoyed reading that post on sinus bacteria, now I'm confused if she has that or is it the dry fowl pox, going to try to find ciprofloxin and apply or should I just stick to terramycin which is the same thing but an ointment?

Cipro eye drops can be obtained online through FirstStateSupply.com. Respiratory disease may require a systemic antibiotic as well. Tylan 50 injectable is a common one, or you can get others from a vet or online. Viral diseases cannot respind to antibiotics.
