Aside from combs, poxes can grown in chicken's mouth or throat too.
Still think it's fowl pox, but not sure.

Thanks for replying Hopefully the vet will be able to help me tomorrow. ive never seen anything like it before, and my family has raised chickens for 21 years! oh well, learn something new every day

You're welcom.If it's fowl pox, then you can vaccinate the sick chickens with vaccine for Newcastle disease. Maybe this will help.If necessary, do some surgery to get rid of poxes.

Let us know what you find out. There is a vaccination for fowl pox--many folks way down south use that due to the high mosquito population. The dry pox is not a real problem, but wet pox can be nasty, if that is indeed what it is.

So I've called around to a few vets, and none of them have ever seen or will see a chicken... and I've checked for avian vets, there's one a about an hour from where I am, and she only sees pet birds like cockatiels and parrots, and birds of prey.

Today, our hen (her name is Tamera, she has a twin named Tia

) is doing ok. I still have her isolated in our garage, she is eating scratch and egg maker crumble, and drinking water w/ electrolytes. She has a good sized crop, full of food, not liquid, thank goodness. And her poop is normal, solid and normal coloring. The lump under her beak has not grown any larger, I did clean out more yellow gunk in the pocket that you can see in the picture. I'm going to keep her isolated just in case she is contagious. I've been checking the others (we have 13) and they are all fine, no lumps or yellow gunk! I'm starting to wonder if she ate something sharp that cut her mouth, and now its growing gunk and getting food and dirt in it? Is there some type of disinfectant i could put on a cotton swab and use it on the hole in her mouth?

The only thing to do as far as I know is use sterile saline solution. Could be she got something that punctured her mouth and it abcessed, or could be canker or wet pox. Really, it's hard to know for sure.

Do you know how much salt per gallon of water to add? In the past I've just added salt to the water until it becomes saturated.

Thanks! Sounds easy to make. Hopefully this will help her out. Her condition hasn't changed, so I guess that's good. She desperately wants back in with the rest of the girls!

I agree... it looks like an abscess. Birds don't make liquid pus, but that dryish yellow pasty stuff you are seeing. So it doesn't drain well. Best bet is to flush it out as well as you can. You may have to resort to antibiotics, but birds do heal amazingly well, given the chance. Please give us an update on how she does!
